Quick Tips for Creating Effective Calls to Action (CTA)

Creating effective calls to action for your WordPress website.

A Call to Action (CTA) is a critical element of any effective website. Your CTA prompt encourages visitors to take a specific action, such as signing up for a newsletter, downloading an e-book, or purchasing a product.

CTAs can be a form, button, link, or image, typically placed prominently on a website to attract visitors’ attention. Sometimes pop-up or slide-in modals are used as well.

Here are some quick considerations and specific examples to keep in mind when creating effective CTAs for your website.

CTA Placement

You want to place your CTA in a prominent area, such as near the top of the page or in the middle of the content. They should also be strategically placed to be easily accessible from any page on the website.

For example, you could have a pop-up that displays as visitors scroll. Or you can create a CTA graphic for your internal pages in the sidebar. Another option is to have a CTA in the footer throughout your site or a notification bar at the top of your website that displays on every page.

CTA Language

Calls to Action should be clear and specific. Use actionable language and be straightforward about what action the visitor will take by clicking the button. Avoid using vague or confusing language that may cause visitors to hesitate.

If possible, talk to your site visitors. Speak in terms they use and understand. Ensure that your verbiage lets them know precisely how they will benefit by taking the action you want them to.

The language used in a CTA should be direct and action-oriented. Use verbs like “get,” “buy,” “download,” “subscribe,” or “register” to make it clear what the visitor will be doing. Avoid vague language like “click here” or “learn more,” as they don’t indicate what the visitor will specifically discover after the action.

CTA Design

The design of your Call to Action is also crucial. For example, using a button should stand out and be easily recognizable as a clickable element. The button’s color, font, and size can also influence the click-through rate.

Did you know that different colors evoke different emotional responses? (Here’s my article on Why Website Colors Matter.)

An eye-catching design is imperative too. The design of a CTA can have a significant impact on its effectiveness. Use a color that stands out from the rest of the page and draws attention to the CTA. Make sure the CTA is large enough to be easily visible and clickable, and use contrasting colors to make it stand out.

Value Proposition

Your CTA should offer a clear value proposition to visitors. Let them know what they will gain by taking the desired action, such as receiving exclusive content, a discount code, or free shipping.

Your Call to Action should make it obvious what the visitor will get in return for taking action. Your value proposition needs to resonate with the visitor’s needs or desires. For example, if you’re offering a free e-book, let visitors know what they’ll learn and how it will benefit them directly.

Testing, Testing, Testing

Finally, it’s essential to test different variations of CTAs to determine which ones are the most effective. Experiment with different copy, designs, and placements to find the optimal CTA for your website. Switch colors, fonts, and font sizes and track the results.

A/B testing can help you compare different CTA versions and determine which generates the most clicks or conversions. A/B testing is where you have example A and example B. So, for example, B could be the same CTA, but you changed colors and verbiage to see what happens.

Be sure to keep notes on the difference between your CTAs so you can correlate those changes. Then you can look at the statistics between the two for comparison.

CTA Main Takeaways

  • Effective CTAs should be strategically placed, clear and specific, well-designed, offer a clear value proposition, and be continually tested to optimize their performance.
  • Rework your CTAs as necessary to ensure they are action-oriented, create a sense of urgency, and offer a clear value proposition using eye-catching design.
