Doing business online means you need to embrace the now and not get stuck on inefficient old technology and presentations. Let’s face it, what is “in” today could very well be “out”next week!
One of the primary methodologies I’ve used for over two decades on all my websites is to not to just keep up but be on the leading edge. This allows me to test and tune new things and make them work for my particular websites in advance of every other copycat. I then have the benefit of the “latest thing” purring like a big block Chevy by the time my “competitors” are getting around to checking things out. Advantage me!
Are your feet stuck in the cement of the past with an outdated slow, clunky, insecure website? For starters, ask yourself these questions:
- Is your WordPress website on a new contemporary child theme? Don’t have a child theme?
- Does your website have SSL integrated?
- Are you confident your website is mobile responsiveness?
- Does your website load in 2-3 seconds?
Any “nos” there? The more nos the more you had better address these issues pronto! Your feet aren’t stuck in cement, you’re stuck in the dark ages!
Folks like me have addressed these issues a long time ago. Not because I’m a WordPress consultant — remember what I said about my methodology? I’d rather be jumping into the new than playing catch up! Having a website means you have no choice but to keep up — or you will be left behind. And it can be a fine line determining which side of that line you are on.
Some will say that as technology evolves you don’t have to jump on the bandwagon the moment change is in the air. Let new things settle out first so you don’t waste any time. That’s true. You can sit back, watch others, see what they do and the results and benefits they will enjoy. At that point, you are already falling behind.
There is a risk when you are leading. You have to figure things out for yourself, there’s probably more testing and tuning to get the results you desire in lieu of following established “how tos”. But the rewards in taking those risks have a far bigger payoff than being a follower.
Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower. ~Steve Jobs
This is why I push my clients to leave their comfort zones and try to keep up with me. You learn new things every single time that you do. There is no downside to doing so. Leading and staying on the edge keeps you ahead of your perceived competitors! Upside!
Is Your Website a Clunker?
Clunker Websites have bad paint jobs, rust around the edges, worn out outdated text, features and functionality that are outdated or don’t produce as good as they should. Those with clunkers are not willing to invest even the cost of an oil change (a new contemporary premium theme) into their decrepit old sites. But, ironically, that doesn’t stop them from expecting great mileage!
Let me share an experience with you that I had just this past weekend. Being I live out in the middle of nowhere, I do most of my shopping online. One of the things I do in my spare time is make crystal jewelry. Making beautiful things for myself, family and friends is something I really enjoy. One could say I am a beadaholic — I can never have enough beads! So, this past weekend I was searching for jewelry making supplies. Keep in mind the sites I visit for my habit are not technology related websites.
The Latest Models
What I found was that I was landing on one clean and professional looking site after another! Websites utilizing all the latest features, tools and best practices to cajole my credit card number into their order forms. User friendly with the information I was looking for to make my decisions. Clean, shiny, custom paint jobs, feature rich websites with all the bells and whistles seem to be the rule — not the exception. Now that’s what I’m talking about!
Then, when I did land on a clunker website — it stuck out like a sore thumb. Emphasis on sore! I couldn’t hit the Back button fast enough!
You can’t help but make an immediate comparison…. Don’t think visitors to your site won’t do the same. Especially if your competitors are on the latest models and keeping up with looks, trends and functionality.
Why isn’t this site SSL’d? My info is not secure!
I’m tired of poking around and not finding what I want!
I can’t see the detail in that photo?
Can’t navigate on my phone!
I Don’t Buy from Clunkers
There were several sites I ran into that had what I was looking for. But they were clunker sites, obviously not up to the latest and greatest and did not provide the confidence I needed to make a purchase with them. I just searched for those products and found them on other sites that did instill my confidence.
If they don’t understand that by looking like they “get” technology and the importance of providing a polished quality current presentation, am I supposed to then make the leap that they “get” online security, privacy, product quality, customer service?
Don’t think so…
After decades of having websites, astute business owners realize that how they present their online business directly correlates with the perception of their brand. You are your site; your site is your business. Clunker site; clunker business.
Would you hand out a ratty stained worn-out business card to a potential contact or customer and expect to impress? Would you pick up a client for a lunch meeting in a “cash for clunkers car” and actually think that they will perceive your company as a successful business?
Why then would you expect that having a clunker website will produce a positive impression, any tangible results or opportunity?
So for those of you with old broken down clunker websites here are some things you can get cracking on today!
Get With Times!
- If you haven’t changed your look and feel in two years or more. Time for a new model!
- Run through your site on tablets and smart phones. If the experience is clunky and navigation is not super easy, time for a mobile responsive theme.
- If you are not yet SSL’d, you need to do so now. Even if you are not selling anything and to help maintain any rankings!
- Run a speed test to find out what needs to be addressed so you can get your site in that 2-3 second sweet spot Google is looking for.
- Are you on shared hosting? Not good enough. Time for Managed WordPress hosting! (<=Affiliate Link for who I use for my sites.) More secure and faster — rankings again!
- Last but not least and just as important: Review your content delete anything that is outdated, superfluous or unnecessary. Same for your menus — less is more when it comes to menus!
Get up to speed, get a new look and reorganize your site to cater to you customers (before your bottom line makes that choice for you)!
At your service,
