WordPress How To: Register Plus Plugin

The IStudio Registration PageThanks to the tons of WordPress plugins there are all kinds of nifty special touches you can add to your Site/Blog to customize how it works and looks based on your unique needs and desires.

To control misuse of your comment system it is wise to have those who want to comment or post on your Blog/Site be registered and logged in. I am very persnickety about what comments I allow on my site. If the comments are self-promotional or link baiting — which 90% are — they don’t see the light of day. I delete more than I approve and have a comment policy in place on all my Blogs.

With that in mind and expecting folks to login to participate, the WordPress login screen needed some sprucing up. I found a neat WordPress plugin that allows you to customize the login screen with your logo and color scheme. This also enforces consistent branding!

There are a bunch of great features in this plugin that help you to manage registrations. Like invitation codes, special questions, disclaimers, CAPTCHA and customized system e-mails. Very cool stuff!

It is little touches like this that separate you from similar sites and competitors.

Download this neat plugin and enhance your user’s registration experience today!

UPDATE: 02.08.10: I’ve found another nifty registration page plugin that I’ve tested and am now using, check this one out too:

  4. Judith says:

Your English is just fine! ;-)

Make sure you have RegisterPlus activated on in Plugins. Then go to General Settings > Register Plus and configure and upload the logo/graphic you want to use. What you see on my site is automatic once the plugin is activated and configured.

Being I am not the developer of the plugin, just recommending its use, you can visit the plugin creator’s site for more support and info here:

    Hello Judith,

Thanks a bunch for this informative post!

I uploaded RegisterPlus to my web site. Now, how can I :
    1. Make a “REGISTER” (or similar) link appear on the my home page?
    2. Link the “REGISTER” hyperlink to the RegisterPlus registration page?

    Thanks,
    Rajeev

  6. Judith says:

    Hey, Rajeev:

You are welcome! What you need to do now is simply link to the WP registration page anywhere you like on your home page.

As an example if you have WordPress installed in the root, the link will go to:

    http://www.PUTYOURDOMAINHERE.com/wp-login.php?action=register

If you have WP installed in a sub-directory, just change the above accordingly! HTH! ;-)

  7. Nada says:

Hi Judith! just found your site and it is so helpful!

I have a question — I’m confused on what register plus does — does it just ask users to log into their own wordpress account? or does it create a new acct. for your site?

I’m trying to create a community blog where users (not bloggers) are able to log in, comment and use the forums. Can you offer any advice? Thank you so much! I’ve been looking everywhere for an expert who I can actually talk to! :)

  8. Judith says:

    Hey, Nada:

RegisterPlus gives you options to customize and modify the WordPress registration form and process. But who is allowed access to what would probably require a membership plugin of some sort. I haven’t used this plugin (yet) but have heard good reviews about MemberWing.

A more robust option that I have used in the past on one of my member sites, that also integrated seamlessly with SMF forums and can be also used with WordPress is aMember. It isn’t free but it is a very robust membership management application with lots of plugins of its own.

Hopefully one of these two will fit your needs. Let me know what you end up doing, O.K.? ;-)

  9. Hi Judith,

I am using the register plus plugin but it is creating some serious issues ie. when a user is getting registered the username is currently taking random even if we are providing the username. Can u please help me on it.

    Thanks

Hoping to hear from you soon.

  10. Judith says:

    Hey, Binson:

Sorry for the delay, I wasn’t online this weekend. ;-) Not sure if I understand your situation, but when someone signs up they are asked for what username to use and that is then what is used. If you have in someway modified how WP works in this regard, this could effect how the plugin works (or doesn’t work). Or there could be a plugin conflict …

Being I am not the developer of the plugin — just someone who has used it in the past, you’ll want to either check the WordPress forums for this plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/register-plus/) or contact the developer of the plugin if you find you still need help.

  12. Judith says:

    Hey, Egemen:

The only thing I can think of is making sure in the settings that “Prevent fake email address registrations.” is NOT checked. Being I only have used the plugin successfully on some of my sites, you would need to really contact the plugin creator for further help or troubleshooting.

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/register-plus/

If you figure this out — please come back and let me know as I get asked about this plugin quite a bit and have not had this problem. ;-)

  13. Judith,

I have read the ups and downs and ins and outs about this plugin. I am sure it rocks! But I’ve noticed that everywhere someone is using it, is just a bit different than what I am attempting to do and I am not sure if it’s the correct plugin or way to be using the plugin.

I am trying to make this site (http://americasfallen.org/designer-submission/) hidden until you are a registered user through the WP interface. Thus you would be able to create an account, get approved, submit blog postings through the WP interface just like normal, but the general public wouldn’t be able to see the site.

Thoughts on how to achieve this?

    Thanks,

    Jacob

  14. Judith says:

    Hey, Jacob:

Thanks for stopping by! Check out the WP-Private plugin to see if that meets your needs:

  15. Killo Chuncherecon says:

    Hi Judith:
Is it possible to embed the registration in a page so it is kept in the site’s context?

    Thanks

  16. Judith says:

    Hey, Killo:

This plugin basically allows you to enhance WordPress’ registration page. I’m sure a PHP guru could help you do what you describe. If you want to look into this further you can start here: Register Plus. HTH!

    Hey, Reggaeman:

Thanks for pointing out the bad link. I’ve updated it to point to the official WordPress Plugin repository for this plugin. I’ve also updated the post note my more recent article on Tricking Out Your WordPress Registration Page for another neat plugin that I’ve tested and am currently using. HTH!

  19. Srini says:

    Hi Judith,

I am using Register Plus to customize the registration. But is there any way to implement my theme for the registration page? By the way, keep up the good work. Your plug-in saved me lot of time. Thanks. Srini

  20. Judith says:

    Hey, Srini:

Thanks for stopping by! What RP does is allow you to customize the look and feel of the inherent WordPress registration page — which basically is what it is. To duplicate your theme exactly certainly can be done, that would require a great deal of WordPress Codex and PHP code knowledge to get to that level of customization. While I am not aware of any plugin that can duplicate your theme exactly — you can get pretty close by makeing the registration page look like your theme in style and color.

Maybe check out another plugin that I am currently using that allows you to designate the background graphic, color scheme and integration of your logo which most certainly can make your registration page a pretty close match: WordPress How To: Trick Out Your Registration Page.

And, thank you for your kind words although I did not develop either of these plugins. I just found them, used them and shared them with you. HTH!

  21. James M. says:

I installed this plugin and saw that the configuration page looks a lot like subscribe2 (probably same author). But like Rajeev, I can’t seem to find the box on which to enter the url for my registration page. In subscribe2, it’s under the ‘Appearance’ section. The nearest box in Register plus is the ‘Login Redirect URL’ but this one says ‘This will redirect the users login AFTER registration.’ Help!

  22. Judith says:

    Hey, James:

What you are experiencing is that RP is using the inherent WP Registration Page — no need to enter a URL — the plugin already knows what it is. While there are other plugins out there other than the two I mention here, I just haven’t gotten around to/nor found the need to investigate them further. HTH!

  23. James M. says:

Thanks Judith. Yeah, after a few more googling sessions, I realized that. And now, I’m using it in all WP sites I put up. Really cool.
