WordPress How To: Trick Out Your Registration Page
I know you are interested in how to make that boring WordPress login/registration page have some flair. I know so based on the tons of visitors to a post I did a bit back about the Register Plus Plugin.
UPDATE 06/2010: With the important and comprehensive release of WordPress 3 this month, it is important to only use plugins where the developers are ensuring their plugins are compatible. The Register Plus plugin originally discussed and recommended in this article, is no longer recommended as it is not being updated or supported by it’s developer. It was last updated in 2008 and the developer’s page for the plugin is now 404ing.
So, let’s look at some alternatives!
Wouldn’t be nice if you knew about even more plugins, tips and tricks that will tell you exactly how you can trick out your WordPress login/registration page? It sure would!
- Binary Moon Custom Login Plugin: This nifty plugin allows you to customize the graphics used on the login page to your liking. An added benefit to this plugin is “Chicks dig blokes with groovy login screens.” I just love developers with a personality!
- Wp Customized Login: Makes integrating your logo into the login screen as easy as 1,2,3.
- Custom Login Plugin: Based on the example sites using this plugin and the available features this just may be the robust option so many of you have asked me about. I used this plugin for my registration page
- Then, install the WP Hide Dashboard plugin so your subscribers only “see” their profile page!
- Get Inspired!: Here you will find some of the neat logins others have done to inspire you to create your own way cool login page.
There you have it! A batch of great plugins and ideas on how to make your registration page all your own! Why be boring when you can be branding?
At your service,
Judith

I am trying to setup to where a visitor can sign up on my site to get an email when I make a new post. (wordpress)
Do you know of a plugin that does this?

Hey, Pat:
No plugin required! Just login to your Google account, if you don’t have one, sign up. Then go to FeedBurner.com and setup your feed there. FeedBurner will walk you through the process and provide you with the code you can copy and paste into your sidebar. Then, visitors can sign-up and get copies of your new posts in their inbox. FeedBurner allows you to configure all kinds of things, including if the e-mail subscribers receive has just a snippet or the full post — your choice.
HTH!

Sidebar Login Plugin
Judith, it’s nice to meet you :) I’m designing my first blog, and I don’t know which of the plug-in listed above work well together and which exclude each other. What combination of these plug-in works well together to allow me the most flexibility with the design and best functionality? Do any conflict?
I’ve installed Registration Plus and can’t find any instructions other than how to set the settings. So far, it doesn’t send any notifications and I don’t know where to look for pending accounts to approve, so I’m looking for detailed instructions, if you know where any might be posted. Devbit isn’t offering any info right now, apparently.
Do you know of a plug-in that will let me integrate the registration form right into the blog, on a separate page, or on a transparent pop up?
Sorry for so many questions! Any you have time to answer are appreciated. Thank you!
Hey, Meisha:
Thanks for stopping by!
I use the Custom Login Plugin mentioned above for my site. It is easy to use and customize so I would start with that. Register Plus doesn’t seem to be supported by the developer any longer and with the recent 3.0 update — that is very important. You want to only use plugins that keep up with WordPress and that you see the developers are actively involved in supporting to avoid conflicts.
I am going to be doing a post about current Registration Page Plugins next week and will check into the stuff you mention. Stay tuned, O.K.?
Hi Judith,
I am new to wordpress and have just installed the register plus plug in. However it does not send confirmation mails to users with gmail, hotmail and a few other accounts.Do you know of a plug-in that will help sort this issue out? Any advice would be appreciated..thank you!
And yes, happy to have found you! Quirky wordpress is quite a challenge!
Hey, Sheetal:
Thanks for stopping by! I no longer recommend the Register Plus plugin. It hasn’t been updated since 2008 and with WordPress 3.0 out that not cool. In addition, the developer’s page for the plugin in 404ing on his site. Therefore, I recommend the alternatives mentioned on this page for now.
I am investigating other options and will be doing a post on the topic later this week. So be sure to sign up for updates (Muse Alerts) in the right sidebar or follow me on Twitter (@wpmuse).
Hi! Register Plus had an option to alter the auto-email with their first password. Do you have a plugin suggestion that does this? Thanks.
Hey, Pascale:
Thanks for stopping by! Yes, I do have a suggestion — watch for my new post later today on a very cool plugin I am now using on my site later today!
Stay tuned… ;-)
I’m having good luck with Theme My Login. It lets you put your Login and Registration right into your blog design, even in the side bar, if you like. It’s my favorite of all the plug-ins I’ve tried :)
Hey, Meisha:
I think that plugin is pretty cool too! Easy to use, looks like my theme and I love how I can customize all the user e-mails!
For those who didn’t see the post about the plugin we are typing about, check it out: Theme Your WordPress Registration Page.
Hey, thanks for this article!
I have been looking for confirmation of Register Plus not working anymore. That being said, do you know of any plugins that work with 3.0 that can be used to force the user to enter information in other profile fields at registration?
Either way, thanks!
Hey, Josh:
Thanks for stopping by — glad to be of service! I am not aware of any plugins you describe that do what you want that have been tested in 3.0 either.
That gets more into a Membership type of plugin setup to get that level of control/permissions. Check out the Easy WordPress Membership Site Plugin. Maybe that would do the trick?
Hey Judith! Iam making a review website and am trying to create a registration page, so users can post reviews. I hav registerplus but couldnt get it to work (it did install and activate), I have wordpress 3.0. I am using MyReviewPlugin, which register plugin do you think I should use? Thanks so much.
I’m a total beginner and dont know code.
Im getting a bit confused with everyone talking about “tricking out” their registration page. Will this be the same page my visitors use? Cheers!
Hey, Monique:
Tricking out your login page simply means sprucing it up a bit to look more like your site instead of the WordPress default registration page. I no longer recommend RegisterPlus as it doesn’t seem to be well supported. Instead check out the registration plugin I use on my sites and that I reviewed here:
Theme My Login
HTH!
Hi Judith,
First off, this is a great site you’ve put together! Its an excellent resource for anyone needing information on WordPress.
A client is looking to build a website that has exclusive member’s only content. Can you recommend a plugin that requires registration to become a member and can be customized to ask any profiling questions we desire? The plugin should have a login function and provide members with the ability to manage their profiles (e.g. update email address, change phone number, password, etc.).
Thanks!
Hey, Julian:
Thanks for stopping by and for your kind words! Check out my review of the Easy WordPress Membership Plugin. HTH!
Hi Judith,
Thanks very much for your excellent posts and site. With this being my first blog creation, I spent a lot of time searching and playing around with different plugins for the log in and register options until I finally stumbled upon your site. I wish I had managed that sooner as every other feature I’ve added since has come from references from your site.
So just wanted to say thanks and to let you know that I have added a link to one of your pages in my New user welcome email (on Gravatars). I’ll be sure to plug you every other chance I get too as a thank you.
Cheers,
Pete
Hey, Peter:
Wow — thank you for your kind words! You’ve made my day — it is little notes like yours that keeps me plugging away at this keyboard. I am so pleased you found me and that my posts have proven helpful!
