Web Site Investment vs. Expense

As with anything to do with starting a new business or keeping an established business healthy, how you approach important issues is critical.

With Web sites, all too often I see site owners approach the cost of having a Web site as an expense when they should be viewing these expenditures as an investment.

When advice is given a healthy portion cut corners or disregard experienced and proven recommendations to save $50 here or a couple hundred there. This tells me they have the wrong point of view and that most likely their site will not reach any tangible goals.

If a couple hundred dollars that when spent can have long term gain is declined, we simply are not making our decisions for all the right reasons. If only a couple hundred bucks is something you cannot afford, you may want to consider shutting down.

Online business as with any off-line enterprise has costs that are upfront and ongoing. If one doesn’t want to spend that kind of money and prefers to do it on a budget, success can still be attained, but then you darned well better be prepared to work harder at the things that have no cost other than your time. Ah…. there’s the rub!

Those who don’t want to incur a monthly fee that ensures ongoing success are typically also those who don’t want to spend their time doing all the things that couple hundred could automate or that are necessary to gaining exposure online.

It’s crystal clear folks. Spend the money and spend the time and you have a chance. To disregard the billions of Web pages currently online and the hundreds of thousands going online daily is naive. There are a healthy group of those sites willing to invest both time and money — because they want to be found, they want to be taken seriously — they want to succeed!

    Do you agree with advise I got lately that unless I want to sell products and reach the masses, that I only need a business card type website (so people who want to check me out based on a word of mouth referral, can see that I have credibility). My strategist said if I want to be found on the net, I need to spend 15-20 hrs blogging with a voice that will help me create raving fans. Isn’t there a middle ground whereby I can offer some good content on my site (perhaps have my blog separate but linked) and still generate leads among people who don’t know me yet?

    I believe your strategist is giving you the full-boat what to do to get found reality check. The more great content you can create — which means the more time you can spend — the greater your chances are for acquiring rankings that get you found. And by having all that content, you build your credibility and therefore fans.

    The number one issue all my clients struggle with is time management. So while I think 15-20 hours is sage advice — it is aggressive, and let’s face it impossible for many folks. With that said, the traffic and therefore business goes to those who are the most aggressive in doing what is necessary to rise above all the noise.

    It is uber competitive online and if we are not open to, able or willing to do what this environment requires to compete, we cannot expect the same results. If we water down what we need to to — we need to realize we are also going to dilute our results.

    I don’t know why you would want to keep your Blog separate. Blogs a a natural a SEO tool for your business site just by virtue of you writing about what you know in your field and are passionate about. That’s where your “voice”, as your strategist correctly labeled it, can keep interested parties coming back for more and following you on social networks that are quickly becoming more relevant than search engines.

    In my opinion, while it may seem overwhelming, you are getting spot on advice. Now, all you have to figure out is how to better manage your time to do as much as you can to produce the desire results.
