Do You Know Über?

Posted by: Judith   in Musings | Blog, Online Business, Online Marketing

As in Über Serious, Über Committed, Über Competitive, Über Realistic!

Über or ueber comes from the German language. It is a cognate of both Latin super and Greek ὑπέρ (hyper), as well as English over (as in “overkill“).

Super… Hyper… Overkill!

To get found, to get exposure for your business; to stand out from the rest is a task no longer for the weak of heart.  Über has to be part of your vocabulary and part of your modus operandi! That is simply a fact.  Not something I’ve made up or say to make things more difficult than they have to be as some have actually insinuated.

It is clear there are those who hang on to what they prefer to believe or what they can deal with rather than opening their eyes to the reality that is doing business online in today’s environment.   I see just as many clients today as I did when this all began get ripped off, throw good money at those who don’t have a clue (but have a good pitch), try services and software that claim to take all the work, time and necessity for knowledge and skill acquisition off the table.

Rare are the niches that are not yet saturated with serious business start-ups and fly-by-nights alike. It is to the point where opening up the physical “brick and mortar” may offer a competitive advantage.   A complete turn around from the days where the Web was supposed to shut down Main Street.  At least with a brick and mortar you can rely on locals knowing where you are who will frequent your establishment.  Online?  You are lucky if you get found — that is unless you add “Über” to your program!

Now, online is the arena of rabidly Über competitive serious businesses. If you don’t look the look, walk the walk and back up the talk — you won’t get orders or inquiries.  To think that online you can market an established business for pennies on the dollar or start a new business and quit your day job in the year 2008 is a thought based in wishful thinking.   That is unless you are friends with Über!

Don’t get me wrong. There are still opportunities and potential for those who approach their program from a business point of view based on solid established principles, methodologies (including some that may not even have been tried or thought of yet) and the necessary costs to get there. These smart businesses, with an “überly” realistic attitude,  know the difference between the hype and the reality.

They embrace the challenges that are required to succeed and rather than ignore them and try to find an easier way (that many times is non-existent), they attack these perceived obstacles and make things work for their enterprise. They are truly Über Netrepreneurs because they know nothing less will suffice!

Leave the hypey sales pitchy blah-blah-blah behind.  If it sounds too easy, too cheap, too quick — know that it is.   Embrace the reality of what online business entails because only then can you even hope to attain the success you desire.  Can you say Über?

That’s my favorite quote from Rob Estes. And boy, does it apply online!

Online is not a “build it and they will come” environment. As a matter of fact it is now probably the proportionate opposite. Without any effort, plans or action, you are lucky if you get found. You must think proactive, reactive and aggressive to survive! Attitude is everything!

Without a marketing strategy that includes natural/organic search engine listings, Pay Per Click programs, ethical and logical linking campaigns, blogging, social media marketing, as well as taking advantage of the multitude of online networking opportunities, any inquiries or orders will be pure happenstance. Happenstance means a chance circumstance. You simply cannot plan your online business’s future based on “chance circumstances.”

Clients relay their frustration about the online environment to me daily. But if you really think about it, online is now not much different than off-line business. You need to plan, you need to have a product or service that folks want at a price that is right. You need to offer exemplary customer service and a professional presentation from your Web site, to your product packaging to your e-mail skills which will allow you to stand above your perceived competitors. And you need to run your business as a business, not as a hobby, part-time venture or with technology being an after thought.

Turn your frustration into action!

Attitude, perserverance, tenacity and marketing is key! And when approached strategically combined with the appropriate actions there is no limit to what you can accomplish online. You just have to start with a realistic perspective understanding the variables that can and will effect your bottom line and then go for it — aggressively!

Things have quieted down around The IStudio the last week or so as usually happens when the “back to school” craziness kicks in.  Folks have other things (and expenditures) on their minds.

We all get a bit distracted by life’s responsibilities from time to time and when that happens, that is the very time you should make the effort to rebuild your faith in yourself.  As you are being tugged and pulled in every direction, as the economy has each of us wondering what is around the next corner — now, is the time to know you, and only you, are they key to whatever happens next.

The online world is nothing if not a magnitude of consequential choices.  You have to know enough to understand what info to trust, understand technology enough to know what service(s) fit your needs including what’s based in reality or hooey.  The choices you make will make a difference between being mediocre or being great!

Only you can make the commitment necessary to your own success. Only you can make the choice to learn, try new things and investigate new methodologies you had never thought of before.  In a way, the online world is just a mirror of the off-line world in that you, and only you, can determine your level of success.

Life is a matter of choices; the primary choice being how you choose to respond to those things around you that are out of your control to control.  So if you feel like you need to get a grip (who doesn’t feel that way every once in a while) why not check out this little flick and bookmark it for when you need a pick-me-up in the  future.
