Our lives are filled with details… Too many to deal with at times.  I get that.  Combine off-line details with all the online details you need to pay attention to and it can very easily become disarmingly overwhelming!  I get that too.  But unfortunately, it is all these details that if ignored will almost guarantee failure.

If you don’t pay attention to your online details (Web stats, content, email etiquette, etc.) — your online program will suffer.  Being so many of the details that are available to us virtually with a click or two, there really is no excuse to ignore their existence.   It is clear that by disregarding these same details will literally affect the level of your online success.  And in my experience, too many think it is O.K. to neglect the details that apply to their online program.

I’m here to tell you it’s not O.K. Those details, such as Web site copy and how you type your e-mails, will lend to your creditability and legitimacy with potential customers. Contact potential business partners reflecting the inability to realize the importance of format, sentence structure and proper grammar and you can count on the fact your inquiry won’t be taken seriously.  Opportunity lost.

Your Web stats — which are a ton of details that can make one feel like they are literally drowning in statistics — are critical to you understanding what is going on (or not going on) at your site.  How can you possibly make an informed business decision on what your next move should be if you don’t know what is actually going on — now?  Opportunity lost.

I guess doing business online  would be a lot simpler if all the data and details were somehow transposed to site owners by osmosis.  But until that happens, site owners have no choice but to embrace the details and use them to their advantage.

Get yourself a day planner and write down all the details you need to pay attention to and when — and then have the discipline to follow through.  This is the type of discipline that separates the men from the boys when it comes to successful businesses — on and off-line.

Only then will you be able to take full advantage of what technology can do for you business.  Nothing happens without the details.

Even if…

  • …you have the best site in the world, if is it not developed with search engines in mind, you won’t get found.
  • …you have the best product in the world, without a professional presentation, you won’t get inquiries/orders.
  • …you can do it yourself, your skills and knowledge are probably not adequate to succeed.
  • …your friend talks about incredible results with their home-brewed site and no PPC or marketing efforts, are you really going to believe them?
  • …you think you have a great idea for a Web business, have you gone to Google and checked to see how much competition you will have?
  • …you have no business experience, are you willing to get the basic principles and methodologies in place to give yourself the best chance for success?
  • …you have a Web site up and running, are you willing to be coached and advised on the important issues you’ve yet to willingly consider?
  • …you don’t like doing a certain thing, are you willing to embrace that concept/activity if it means a difference to your bottom line?
  • …a professional provides you with the issues/features you need to integrate into your program, will you make a point of putting them in place?

Even if…. you choose to ignore all the above at first, which many for whatever reason think they have a choice to do or not and still succeed; there is still a chance for success by putting your ego on the shelf and becoming open to all that you simply don’t know or are even aware you need to know. There is no way you can go this alone — even us pros learn something new each and every day we go into the office!

Realize you will need help, advice and coaching. From a company that has your best interests at heart; not just the desire to get into your pocketbook or to cater to what you don’t want to deal with. There are no short-cuts to success.

Do you have what it takes even if it means you have to learn, apply, spend and be coached, acquire new skills and embrace new concepts? Including the frustrations and challenges that go with running any business on or off-line? You won’t succeed unless you answer a resounding “Yes!” to that last question.

Time to throw away those rose colored glasses.

Do You Know Über?

As in Über Serious, Über Committed, Über Competitive, Über Realistic!

Über or ueber comes from the German language. It is a cognate of both Latin super and Greek ὑπέρ (hyper), as well as English over (as in “overkill“).

Super… Hyper… Overkill!

To get found, to get exposure for your business; to stand out from the rest is a task no longer for the weak of heart.  Über has to be part of your vocabulary and part of your modus operandi! That is simply a fact.  Not something I’ve made up or say to make things more difficult than they have to be as some have actually insinuated.

It is clear there are those who hang on to what they prefer to believe or what they can deal with rather than opening their eyes to the reality that is doing business online in today’s environment.   I see just as many clients today as I did when this all began get ripped off, throw good money at those who don’t have a clue (but have a good pitch), try services and software that claim to take all the work, time and necessity for knowledge and skill acquisition off the table.

Rare are the niches that are not yet saturated with serious business start-ups and fly-by-nights alike. It is to the point where opening up the physical “brick and mortar” may offer a competitive advantage.   A complete turn around from the days where the Web was supposed to shut down Main Street.  At least with a brick and mortar you can rely on locals knowing where you are who will frequent your establishment.  Online?  You are lucky if you get found — that is unless you add “Über” to your program!

Now, online is the arena of rabidly Über competitive serious businesses. If you don’t look the look, walk the walk and back up the talk — you won’t get orders or inquiries.  To think that online you can market an established business for pennies on the dollar or start a new business and quit your day job in the year 2008 is a thought based in wishful thinking.   That is unless you are friends with Über!

Don’t get me wrong. There are still opportunities and potential for those who approach their program from a business point of view based on solid established principles, methodologies (including some that may not even have been tried or thought of yet) and the necessary costs to get there. These smart businesses, with an “überly” realistic attitude,  know the difference between the hype and the reality.

They embrace the challenges that are required to succeed and rather than ignore them and try to find an easier way (that many times is non-existent), they attack these perceived obstacles and make things work for their enterprise. They are truly Über Netrepreneurs because they know nothing less will suffice!

Leave the hypey sales pitchy blah-blah-blah behind.  If it sounds too easy, too cheap, too quick — know that it is.   Embrace the reality of what online business entails because only then can you even hope to attain the success you desire.  Can you say Über?
