I love inspirational quotes and have them on almost every page of my site. I really believe that when the right quote comes around at right time it can motivate, encourage and many times embolden people to be better than assume they can be.
With that in mind, here are some of my favorite words of wisdom from the Napoleon Hill Foundation:
“The person who complains that he or she never had a chance probably hasn’t the courage to take a chance.
Thomas Edison once observed that the reason most folks don’t recognize opportunity when it comes along is that it is often dressed in coveralls and looks like work. Often opportunity involves a great deal of work and a willingness to take a chance on something, the outcome of which may be uncertain. Eventually you reach a point when you must either accept an opportunity with all of its unknowns or else turn your back on it. No one can tell you when you have reached that point; you alone know when it’s time to make your move, to have the courage to take a chance.”
This quote sums up the attitude one must have when starting a business online. There are no guarantees; nothing is in stone. Opportunities abound filled with unknowns that require a great deal of work. And many times the only catalyst is having the courage to make things happen.

That’s my latest favorite quote from Rob Estes. And boy, does it apply online!
Online is not a “build it and they will come” environment. As a matter of fact it is now probably the proportionate opposite. Without any effort, plans or action, you are lucky if you get found. You must think proactive, reactive and aggressive to survive!
Without a marketing strategy that includes natural/organic search engine listings, Pay Per Click programs, ethical and logical linking campaigns, as well as taking advantage of the multitude of online networking opportunities, any inquiries or orders will be pure happenstance. Happenstance means a chance circumstance. You simply cannot plan your online business’s future based on “chance circumstances.”
Clients relay their frustration about the online environment to me daily. But if you really think about it, online is now not much different than off-line business. You need to plan, you need to have a product or service that folks want at a price that is right. You need to offer exemplary customer service and a professional presentation from your Web site, to your product packaging to your e-mail skills which will allow you to stand above your perceived competitors. And you need to run your business as a business, not as a hobby, part-time venture or after thought.
Turn your frustration into action!
Marketing is key. And when approached strategically combined with the appropriate actions there is no limit to what you can accomplish online. You just have to start with a realistic perspective understanding the variables that can and will effect your bottom line and then go for it — aggressively!
Once you are embrace this reality — competition get out of the way! Plan on being busy — very busy!

Even if…
- …you have the best site in the world, if is it not developed with search engines in mind, you won’t get found.
- …you have the best product in the world, without a professional presentation, you won’t get inquiries/orders.
- …you can do it yourself, your skills and knowledge are probably not adequate to succeed.
- …your friend talks about incredible results with their home-brewed site and no PPC or marketing efforts, are you really going to believe them?
- …you think you have a great idea for a Web business, have you gone to Google and checked to see how much competition you will have?
- …you have no business experience, are you willing to get the basic principles and methodologies in place to give yourself the best chance for success?
- …you have a Web site up and running, are you willing to be coached and advised on the important issues you’ve yet to consider?
- …you don’t like doing a certain thing, are you willing to embrace that concept/activity if it means a difference to your bottom line?
- …a professional provides you with the issues/features you need to integrate into your program, will you make a point of putting them in place?
Even if…. you choose to ignore all the above at first, which many for whatever reason think they have a choice to do or not and still succeed; there is still a chance for success by putting your ego on the shelf and becoming open to all that you simply don’t know or are even aware you need to know. There is no way you can go this alone — even us pros learn something new each and every day we go into the office!
Realize you will need help, advice and coaching. From a company that has your best interests at heart; not just the desire to get into your pocketbook or to cater to what you don’t want to deal with. There are no short-cuts to success.
Do you have what it takes even if it means you have to learn, apply, spend and be coached, acquire new skills and embrace new concepts? You won’t succeed unless you answer a resounding “Yes!” to that last question.
Time to throw away those rose colored glasses.
