Web Site Owners Thought of the Day

Posted by: Judith   in Musings | Blog

If you follow my writings, you know I have to stick in an inspirational quote every once and awhile. Most of the time the quotes come from Napoleon Hill. Not only because I receive the Napoleon Hill Foundation’s Quote of the Day, but because pretty much every quote I received hits home. (I recommend all business folks sign up for these common sense daily reminders.)

Today’s Quote:

IF YOU WERE YOUR OWN EMPLOYER, WOULD YOU BE ENTIRELY SATISFIED WITH THE DAY’S WORK YOU HAVE DONE TODAY?

At the end of the day, it matters little what others think of you; what’s important is what you think about yourself. As you reflect on your day’s work, ask yourself, Have I given 100 percent of my time and talents today? If this were my company, would I like it to be filled with hundreds of other people just like me, or would I prefer to hire individuals with a little more initiative? When you have become the kind of person you would like to work with or have working for you, you aren’t far from the day when you will own the company-or at least become a valuable part of it. Most important, you can sleep soundly at night, serene in the knowledge that you have done your best, that you have earned your pay, and that you have met the standards of performance you require of yourself.

Whether you run your site part-time or full, it is your company. Many think business is easy, in particular that slapping up a Web site will allow you to quit your day job and sit around eating bonbons. This quote in particular hit home because I just worked pretty much through the weekend; combined with the number of part-time Web site owners to be who contacted me last week thinking having a Web site was pretty much a leisure activity that pays well.

I’ve been at this over 13 years. What was this last weekend like? Let’s start with Thursday…. in a 8:00a, stopped for lunch and dinner, at it until 10p. Friday in at 8a, pushed this chair away at 12:05a, Saturday: 7:30a - 2p and Sunday: 10a until 7:30p. This gives you an idea of what running your own business is like. No, I don’t have to work those hours, but when my business requires it, I do it.

Nothing less than that sort of work ethic will allow you to thrive online and thinking otherwise is simply wishful thinking by those who don’t have what it takes. As I tell folks all the time — my boss is a slave driver.

in·ter·ac·tive [in-ter-ak-tiv]
–adjective

  1. acting one upon or with the other.
  2. of or pertaining to a two-way system of electronic communications, as by means of television or computer.
  3. (of a computer program or system) interacting with a human user, often in a conversational way, to obtain data or commands and to give immediate results or updated information.

Every day I have to remind clients that this “online thing” is interactive. Many have a hard time understanding that they need to be involved — how much they need to be involved. That their level of involvement — of interactivity — will determine their level of success.

I really have never known where the “built it and they will come” mentality came from when it comes to online business. That may have held some weight back in the day, but now, you’re lucky if you get found. And, when you get found (because you’ve embraced all that interactive stuff I “preach” about), you had better be the epitome of credibility, professionalism and customer service.

There are still those who want static HTML sites — those folks tend to be technophobic. The thought of having to be interactive scares them to death. All the posting, article writing, social media recommendations, RSS and the like sends them running — “that’s just too much to learn!” Well folks, I can honestly say that I learn something new each and every day around here. If you don’t want to learn; you probably should question why you have a Web site.

And, if all that learning doesn’t scare them to the point of inaction — it sounds like too much work. Either way, my advice to those who don’t want to learn or spend the time interacting, is to simply not bother. They’ll be throwing their hard earned dollars away on a site that won’t get found and won’t produce.

Many of my clients have discussed with me their insecurity in regard to the perceived skills and knowledge required to proceed in today’s environment. Then, combined with an overall intimidation with technology — that’s the reason why they don’t embrace what they hear, read and see is happening around them.

The ironic thing is, with applications like WordPress, Wiki and others, being involved and interactive actually has never been easier. If you can type, you can Blog, go social, interact and discuss your experience and knowledge to the benefit of your business. And you just might be surprised on how much fun you actually end up having!

Unfortunately, I fear those who hold back instead of bolding going forward and facing the challenges that online participation demands of each of us, as of today at this point in time, will see that reflected in their bottom line — and not in a good way.

Know that with the right partners, you can be coached through any frustrations, concerns and unknowns or whatever you perceive is preventing you from joining the social revolution.

“Come to the edge.
We might fall.
Come to the edge.
It’s too high!
COME TO THE EDGE!
And they came
and she pushed
and they flew…”

We all have only so much time in a day. How we choose to use it can make a huge difference in our business’ success. One of the most often heard excuses I get from clients or those who ask my advice about doing this or that is “I just don’t have the time…” Oh-oh — online is all about spending time — online.

Time is a commodity. I know all about it. I get in early in the morning, no breaks and a half-hour lunch. Before I know it the day is gone. Most times with a “To Do” list not completed. So, I work a couple extra hours (if necessary much longer than that) in the evening after dinner instead of watching some commercial laden T.V. show. And, I work most Saturday mornings (if the weather stinks, I’ll even work until 3-4p). You do what you have to do to reach your goals. You make the time.

If you think about it, how you spend your time is a matter of priorities. If something isn’t important enough, you’ll never have the time. Or you won’t spend the time required to get the desire results. With this interactive technology, why is it so many can’t find the time to actually interact?

Time is a funny thing — it never changes. 24 hours in every single day; 60 minutes to every hour; 60 seconds to every minute. What sets those who succeed online apart from all the wannabes is they actually spend time online!

Reading, learning, writing, experimenting, networking, Blogging, commenting — all things that demand your time if you want to have a healthy online enterprise. Find the time; make the time or it is probably best you get off-line and save yourself some time and money.

“You may delay, but time will not.”
