Don’t Fall for the Amateur Trap…
Because of the economy there are newbie online business owners migrating to the Web in droves looking for that silver bullet opportunity. All in hopes of additional income; many with false dreams of ease and minimal expense to accomplish that goal.
Don’t buy into the hypey sales pitchy junk so many will throw at you all in an effort to get into your pocket book. There is nothing cheap or easy about online success.
Are you a Web Business Amateur? Let’s find out!
You Know You’re a Web Business Amateur When…
- Your e-mail address is your ISP address; not your site’s dot com.
- You don’t have any contact information, physical address or even a contact form on your Web site.
- Your site’s design is obviously (to everyone but you) home-brewed and does not instill confidence and legitimacy.
- You have not secured your site to accept payments or sensitive information.
- You believe you can make money by only working at it an hour or two a day.
- You believe that if you buy a “package” that makes online business sound easy — it will be.
- You mass market instead of target market.
- You think because you can mechanically do everything yourself, that means you should — regardless of the final results.
- You ignore advice from seasoned professionals because you don’t like the expense, effort or knowledge acquisition that will be required of you. You catch yourself thinking “There has to be an easier way!”
- You believe “Top 10″ Search Engine rankings will be easy to attain with little effort, plan or long term strategy.
Definition of an Amateur?
amateur –noun
- a person inexperienced or unskilled in a particular activity
- characteristic of or engaged in by an amateur; nonprofessional
- one lacking the skill of a professional
- lacking professional skill or expertise; “a very amateurish job”; “inexpert but conscientious efforts”; “an unskilled painting”
Don’t fall into the “amateur trap” and believe that without the skills, knowledge and understanding of how business is done online that you can and will succeed. There are tons of folks just waiting to take advantage of anyone who actually believes that.
With the economy being in flux, the number of new potential online business owners investigating starting something new online has increased exponentially. And good for them! You won’t get anywhere unless you try! There is opportunity out there for niche markets, products and services. When approached realistically…
However, if you are new to online business, you will need to have a work ethic like none you’ve thought you were capable of having and an insatiable desire to learn. Then throw in a professional or two you can depend on to help you reach any tangible goals. This not only gives you the best chance for success but helps to avoid the amateur trap which many times ends up costing more than doing things properly in the first place would have cost. Both in time and $$.
Even with Frontpage or any other HTML Editor, you may be able to move things around and change this or that, but you certainly will not end up with a polished and professional presentation. Nor can you expect results when key elements are disregarded or completely missing. (Not to mention that HTML sites are simply no longer effective in today’s environment.)
If it were so easy; everyone would be succeeding — but instead success is enjoyed only by a small percentage of commercial Web site owners. Why is that?
If you don’t understand; don’t want to understand; don’t want to make the effort to learn the things you need to understand, you simply will not succeed online. Online success doesn’t happen by osmosis or because you slap up some files to a Web server and call it your Web site.
Yes, the economy has changed — but so has technology. Technology doesn’t wait for anyone and I’ve had to make a daily effort to keep up for the 15 years I’ve run The IStudio. That is why I’ve survived when so many have fallen by the wayside. If you don’t keep up — you will fail. That in of itself is a major effort for any online business owner to embrace — keeping up.
Each market, each site owner, each Web site is different in how they will approach the very same markets, how they operate their business as well as how they handle various situations and dilemmas. The decisions made in these areas will make the difference between success and failure. If you don’t do things right — you will fail. It isn’t cheap or easy….
If you are an amateur Web business owner, you may assume otherwise — to your peril.
Time to leave the amateur behind and start working towards becoming a pro!
At your service,
Judith
