Freedom, Choices and Whiners…

Posted by: Judith   in Musings | Blog, Online Business, Rants

THE PERSON WHO COMPLAINS THAT HE OR SHE NEVER HAD A CHANCE PROBABLY HASN’T THE COURAGE TO TAKE A CHANCE.

Thomas Edison once observed that the reason most folks don’t recognize opportunity when it comes along is that it is often dressed in coveralls and look like work. Often opportunity involves a great deal of work and a willingness to take a chance on something, the outcome of which may be uncertain. Eventually you reach a point when you must either accept an opportunity with all of its unknowns or else turn your back on it. No one can tell you when you have reached that point; you alone know when it’s time to make your move, to have the courage to take a chance. ~ Napoleon Hill

On this eve of our 4th of July celebration, I thought I would use my freedom to rant about how so many gripe about what it takes to do business online.   They have the freedom to make choices, what to pay attention to, what to learn, what to embrace, what to invest in — or not.  It’s all about freedom and choices.

Who would have thought a mere decade ago that so much information, personal growth tools and opportunities would be accessible to you simply by sitting in front of your computer?  And that isn’t enough for most. Too much work, too much to learn, too much money…. on it goes.  What would our Founding Fathers have thought about what we have available to us today, that so many feel is too difficult, too frustrating and too much work?

I hear it every day and literally have to make an effort to not let all the negative energy affect me.  Some days it is easier than others…

See, I am a happy person.  I prefer to be that way and I work at it. Call me and you always get a cheery voice.  E-mail me and you always get a positive response.   Anyone who talks to me sees the sparkle in my eye when I talk about what I do here at The IStudio — even after all these years.  They hear the excitement in my voice when I talk about the potential, the opportunity, the benefits — all there for the taking.

But…

Do you know that the good number of those I talk to and work with are not excited about their opportunities?  Nope — instead they complain about what they don’t understand, what they don’t want to do, how much time a necessary task may take.  It’s all complaints.  No enthusiasm, no excitement, no thrill about the challenge ahead of them — it’s all a PIA!

That’s where you separate the wheat from the chaff!  I’ve yet to work with a whiner who has succeeded.  Success requires a positive attitude!

After consulting onliners about how to succeed online for over 13 years, I have found that part of my responsibility is that I am expected to listen to whining, griping and commentary that at times can be downright insulting.  Why?  Because I “get it”, does that mean I am supposed to cater to those who don’t want to?  Hey, I’m the first to understand there will be frustrations. But geeze, where along the line did frustration not be part of learning new things?

Succeeding online won’t happen by osmosis because you put up a site and sit on your hands.  It won’t happen if you refuse to make the effort to understand and learn about the technology you are using and the variables you need to embrace and consider.  It won’t happen unless you are prepared to spend (both in time and cost) the necessary resources to be competitive.

When you decide to partner with an experienced professional, rather than become a whiner, how about being excited, enthused and energetic when it comes to the opportunity that lies ahead of you?  Feed off your consultant’s desire to help you succeed instead of thinking they are there only to hear you complain about what you don’t like or are unwilling to do.  Don’t make excuses about why you are not embracing the reality of what online business entails and certainly try to refrain from making comments that because you don’t understand something, that is in someway their fault.

Instead, suck it up and get into boot camp mode so that you have the best chance of experiencing ROI! That’s what it will take to succeed online, no less.  If you cannot adopt that die-hard positive attitude — then don’t start in the first place. Use your energy and your freedom to learn, grow and thrive!

Technology is what it is whether you like it or not and it will move on without you.  If you find all you are doing is whining and complaining, maybe you should rethink and go off-line so you are not a constant downer to those of us who appreciate and realize the opportunity that lies ahead for all of those who are up to the challenge.

Plus, some of use just prefer to work with happy, positive, motivated people….

One thing I always make a point of doing when I don’t understand something or if an issue seems wrong, incorrect, a problem or “broken” is to double-check that my actions or lack of knowledge is not leading to an incorrect perception.

I know I don’t know everything. I know there are things out there that I can learn about — and do almost every day. What amazes me however, is how many onliners jump to point fingers and make accusations based on wrong assumptions. Nor do they give a thought to the fact that the issue at hand could be due to their lack of knowledge, experience, information or understanding.

What is ironic is that these are generally folks who are way techno-challenged, make no effort to increase their knowledge base or skill set and are placing blame where there is none - due to not having an understanding in regard to the complexity, processes or background issues involved in the online arena. They have their uninformed view and everything needs to fit in that little box or look out! And if they are the “customer” then they are always right, aren’t they?

Why such a nasty and accusatory tone right out the gate? Why not ask for clarification? Why are we assuming that there is wrong-doing or that something nefarious is going on? Because of frustration their evil twin has taken over! Frustration is no excuse to become nasty or libelous.

You will find that if you were to simply ask for clarification in regard to a concern, in most cases you would receive a response that would address the issue in detail to your satisfaction. No need to make accusations that simply are not true — without looking at your ability to understand the reality and intricacy of the issue(s) at hand.

When I have a question or concern, I ask kindly for clarification — with humility. I could have missed something, misunderstood or simply may not be aware of details that had an effect on the issue of concern. Or, the other side could have made a simple mistake that is easily resolved. That’s how you learn and build strong relationships — buy asking — not accusing.

I never assume the other side is out to ruin my day, rip me off, have screwed up, or unethical in how they do business. Nor do I feel the need to lecture them about how they should do business before I have all the facts. And if I do find I am mistaken, I always, always, do not hesitate to humbly apologize. On the flip-side, rarely do I receive that courtesy when informing onliners that their perceptions are incorrect while explaining what is really at play. No thank yous, no “oh, I see — sorry for the trouble.”

The moral to the story is, if you believe something is amiss — simply e-mail with courtesy and ask for assistance in a respectful tone. You may find you not only had jumped to conclusions but you may learn something new and save face in the process.

I receive so many feeds and eZines that there are times I simply don’t have time to even open them all let alone read them all! But I’m an infoholic and do my best to keep on the edge by watching and analyzing the commentary, studies and observations of online marketing “experts.”

In doing so, being an expert in training for the entire life of my consulting practice here at TheIStudio.com, I’ve realized that anyone who is attempting to keep up, trying to get it and working towards a better understanding of how online marketing works is in fact an expert in training. You simply cannot know it all when what you know is constantly in flux and morphing many times for reasons yet unknown or documented.

The online marketing gig, right now, is evolving like crazy. Social media and online marketing have taken a turbo turn into an arena that is being tested, analyzed, extrapolated by every “expert” imaginable. What is clear is how every single self-proclaimed expert has a different take on what we’re doing, should be doing and/or where we are going when it comes to online marketing. Some of these experts back up what my over a decade of experience proves out, while there are those who go in directions I have yet to consider causing me to question what I thought to be true just the day before.

That’s the exhilarating part of right now! If you thought the early days of the Web some 10-15 years ago was the wild wild west, you haven’t seen anything yet. Everything can be tried, tested, analyzed, changed to produce different results — and that’s exciting. It seems almost every expert is on a mission based on experience unique to them to determine metrics, create successful strategies and more importantly, how to measure everything that has to do with site visitor’s habits and activities to produce ROI. The funny thing is not any program, strategy or “metric” will apply the same to every site, program, market, methodology or strategy.

Each Web site is an island unto itself in regard to approach, tools, methodologies and strategies that may work. And not anyone can tell the site owner exactly, specifically, what to expect other than to expect the unexpected. There will always be new twists and turns that are unique to each individual site that can cause even the most expert of “experts” to scratch their heads.

Online marketing is a work in progress. Anyone who claims to be an expert will admit that they realize the importance of building on their expertness on almost an hourly basis. This is the only way to ensure they have all the information and data available to apply to the project at hand — at that moment in time.

“The world is so fast that there are days when the person who says it can’t be done is interrupted by the person who is doing it.” -Anon.

It is the experts in training that push the envelope, try new things no one has yet to try, and repurpose strategies so they can be born anew. Thank goodness we don’t have to crate around those wheels everywhere we go!
