Even though there are various blogging platforms that are available for you to make a Blog, being a WordPress Consultant means that’s the platform I recommend you use.

Many hosting companies offer automated installation of WordPress in their control panels for those not into FTP and configuration details. I use HostGator because of their ease of use in this regard and their unparallelled support for all my sites — including this one. (I never recommend a product or service unless I am using it on my own sites.)

Blogging is popular because all the Blog owner really has to do is type about their interests, passion, products or services. Once you have WordPress installed and your chosen Premium Theme in place and tweaked to your liking, the technical aspect of making your Blog is pretty much on auto pilot leaving the Blogger to only have to worry about what they want to write about.

So, how do you make a Blog?

Here are some considerations and links to resources here on my site and elsewhere to show you how to make a Blog:

If you already have a Web site, you can easily add a Blog by installing WordPress on your established server. Or check your Web host’s control panel (cPanel) for a WordPress installation tool.

If Blogging for fun or a hobby, you can setup a free blog @ Google’s Blogger.com or WordPress.com. While these services are not as flexible (you do get what you pay for) if you want to Blog purely for hobby (non-commercial) reasons, and don’t want anything too fancy, either of these services will do.

If Blogging for business, you need to get your own HostGator Hosting Account ($4-$12 a month) so you can have your own domain and use your domain e-mail address. Free services won’t do in this case. In addition, Premium WordPress themes are now designed to be a CMS (Content Management System) that includes a Blog. So you can manage your entire site and Blog at the same time.

WordPress Themes: There are a ton of free theme archives out there but you have to be careful because free themes generally include not only the author’s link in the footer, but links to sometimes questionable sites and affiliate programs as well.

I have no problem linking to the developer who offers free themes however including additional promo links that many times are encrypted and cannot be removed, is going a bit too far. You also have to hope that when WordPress updates that those free theme developers will offer an updated version of their theme on a timely basis if necessary (otherwise your site may break when you update WordPress).

Check that the free theme developer also offers pay-for Premium Themes in addition to their free offerings as this reflects they do understand the importance of supporting their themes as WordPress evolves.

WordPress Theme Resources:

5 Reasons to Choose a Premium Theme

How to Choose the Right Premium WordPress Theme

My Handpicked List of Premium WordPress Theme developers.

WordPress.org Resources:

Development Blog

Documentation

Plugins

Suggest Ideas

Support Forum

Themes

WordPress Planet

Once you have WordPress installed you are then armed with the above resources so you can start dancing at the keyboard! Be very selective and prudent as to what ads you have on your site, how many and where they are inserted.

Typos and poor grammar.
Be sure to use the WordPress spell check on everything you add to your site. Read your posts out loud and be committed to continually improving your writings skills.

Lack of Social Media options.
All business sites should minimally connect with Twitter, LinkedIn and have a Facebook business page. It doesn’t matter what you think of Social Media, your customers are using these sites and you need to be there!

Low quality or improperly sized photos and graphics.
This is a visual medium. Photos and graphics enhance your message, but only when properly formatted and relative to the topic of the content they are embedded within.

Lack of easily found contact information or contact form.
“Contact” should be a visible easy to find tab/link that contains all your contact information and your contact form.

Lack of the basic, standard and customary information site visitors want to know.
You know the info you get asked for by prospective customers — have it on your site. Don’t make them have to e-mail you for the very basics. If you don’t have a FAQ that covers the questions you get asked most — add the creation of a FAQ to your To Do list right now!

Lack of or slow responsiveness to visitor comments.
Speed matters! In a world where customer service is anemic at best you can stand out from the crowd and your perceived competitors by offering prompt and detailed responses to visitor inquiries.

Stale or rarely updated content.
Brochureware is dead. Sites without recent and regularly updated content look neglected and cause site visitors to wonder if anyone is home. Try to post at least once every week — more if possible.

Focus on promotional content instead of providing helpful content that your visitors desire.
Contrary to popular belief your site isn’t all about you. It should be about you offering the content your visitors seek while soft-selling your expertise and knowledge. Too much of a hard sell is a turn off.

The above are just a few of the issues I see on a regular basis that many WordPress site owners disregard or overlook. All of which will contribute to how your business is perceived.

To think you can do what you want or are only willing to do on the issues mentioned here, will speak volumes about your business and what it will be like to work with you. And, I don’t think you’ll like what it’s saying…

At your service,
Judith
Your WordPress Consultant

Your WordPress Site IS Your Face to the World! is a post from: WordPress Consultant: Judith Kallos, At Your Service...

Facebook Friend, Fan or Fraud?

Musings

Social Media

social media

Having a handful of my own Facebook pages and working with clients on how to best use theirs, I’ve found that most folks on Facebook are frauds.
