Octo-search Growing Like Gangbusters!
Trying to pull relevantly for one word keywords is next to impossible. Especially for new sites. That has always been the case except for back in the day when there weren’t that many sites — or that many searchers for that matter.
A recent report that was touting Google’s dominance of 72% of search traffic for March, 09 had the usual Google gains and other search engines lose scenario. That always surprises me because I’m not a big Google fan when it comes to serving up relevant sites. I always seem to find better more relevant (which is the point right?) sites on Yahoo! or even MSN sometimes. But hey, I guess that’s just me.
In this report was some stunning numbers that were quite interesting and worth pointing out and considering. Yes, we all know Google rules but…
For short keyword searches — those numbers were down. They don’t level out until you hit three word searches. From there is goes up, up, up! When you get into longer search phrases — double figure increases. Eight word searches were up 20%! Seven word searches up 11%. When you are talking the volume noted in this report — that’s a bunch-o-searches!
This tells us two things:
- Searchers are realizing, probably due to information overload, that the more detailed and specific their search string, the better the chances of actually being served up the most relevant sites.
- We need to look at how we can take advantage of this obvious trend and make sure to incorporate those longer phrases into our sites and content.
You can download the full report here. Time to do some keyword research for those longer phrases and get to work!
