5 Useful Plugins for the New WordPress Admin Bar
The newly added Admin Menu Bar in WordPress 3.1 has been the topic of many conversations here @ The IStudio. So I thought I would share with you some information that addresses the questions and concerns I’ve been asked about most.
The recent WordPress 3.1 update introduced a nifty new Admin Bar. What’s neat about this menu bar is that it adds access to the basic features WordPressers use most often to a top-of-page menu bar. What is really cool is that Admin bar is also visible when you are logged in and preview your site giving you one click access back to your Dashboard.
While you can tell I don’t mind this new feature, there are those who don’t like it and want it to go away — now! WordPress Developers hate it — Users love it. So if you want to make it go away — easy enough! (You know the guys and gals over @ WordPress give you a choice and make it easy to config WordPress to do what you desire.)
So, if you don’t like the new Admin Menu and want to turn it off:
Go to: Users > Your Profile > Show Admin Bar

Much to the chagrin of some developers, “when viewing site” is on by default. Just check or uncheck based on your preferences and save.
I’ve also discovered a whole slew of new plugins that have popped-up to modify and better utilize this new feature.
New WordPress 3.1 Admin Menu Bar

Here are five plugins you might find helpful based on what my clients have asked about:
- Genesis Admin Bar Add-on: If you are using a StudioPress Child Theme on the Genesis Framework, this plugin adds an extra menu to your Admin Bar with links that are resources related to the Genesis Framework.
- WP Custom Admin Bar: A really simple and easy to use plugin to help gain control of the new Admin Bar.
- Admin Bar Minimiser: Easy way to minimize the new WordPress 3.1 admin bar at the click of a button.
- Stick Admin Bar To Bottom: If you don’t like the Admin bar taking up those 28 pixels at the top of the screen — this plugin moves it to the bottom.
- Global Hide/Remove Admin Bar Plugin: This plugin is great for Admins who want to disable the Admin menu bar for all users.
The above are just the plugins I’ve found useful thus far. There are others out there and you can bet if a need arises more will certainly follow!
