Twitter + Lemming = Twemming

Are you a Twemming? Be honest….

I track a bunch of terms on Twitter that have to do with my market and WordPress. While it is expected that I’ll see some Tweets about the same post or information, what surprised me is the retweeting going on that is downright lemming-ish.

It’s almost like some folks are hypnotized to retweet anything and everything and then the same stuff over and over again. Besides the overzealous marketers that do nothing but drive folks away because they are so repetitively annoying, I wonder what the motivation is to retweet certain things beyond what is common sense and necessary or that have no value whatsoever… Just because we can?

You know you are a “Twemming” if:

    Are you a Twemming?

  • You don’t have an original thought or post anything of value written by you for your followers.
  • You retweet what you see everyone else retweeting.
  • You honestly believe “I Tweet therefore I am.”
  • You retweet your own stuff so many times that you’ve become annoying.
  • You retweet anything that says to “retweet to all your friends.”
  • You follow more than 50 people (common no one can keep up with or form any sort of valuable relationship with even that many folks.)

We all have bandwidth issues when it comes to time manangement.

If you’ve read any of my stuff, you know I only use Social Media when it proves valuable. Not to have a “look at me” moment or to ram my stuff down onliners throats adnausem:

When clients want to know how to best approach the use of Twitter, I advise two simple points:

  1. Only follow those who provide true value when it comes to gathering business and market intelligence, or that you are genuinely interested in forming an actual relationship with.
  2. Only Tweet valuable information you know your followers are looking for and will enjoy — seriously.

Lemming (noun):
a member of any large group following an unthinking course towards mass destruction

Hey, before you leave — can you retweet this to all your friends?

At your service,
Judith
