It’s Halloween week….
Let’s brush off the cobwebs and revive some classics!
“Oh, America. I wish I could tell you that this was still America, but I’ve come to realize that you can’t have a country without people. And there are no people here. No, my friends. This is now the United States of Zombieland.”
This is the opening dialog for the movie Zombieland. What does this have to do with WordPress? Well, as of late I’ve been contacted by quite a few WordPress zombies. Folks who just blindly follow anything that negates having to hunker down and learn or embrace new skills of any kind. Zombies!
And when I point out the reality of what succeeding online entails I actually hear groans that could be right out of any zombie movie! But that’s what I do — I am a zombie killer.
What happened to wanting to learn new things, gain new skills, work 12 hour days because you have an idea you are passionate about? Now, many are not passionate about anything — they just want a “system” that shows them the money. They are zombies.
But guess what? The money doesn’t come to those who slap up a WordPress site and write like a zombie about things they don’t have first hand knowledge, experience and most importantly a passion about.
Going through a “system” of things you should be doing on a topic that bores you to death or you have no personal investment or actual life experience in — makes one a zombie. A zombie that maybe it would help to eat some brains so commonsense would return!
I know the economy sucks — I hear it every day on and off-line. But the thing is just because the economy sucks, that doesn’t negate best practices or methodologies that are required to attain any level of success. That is, unless you are a zombie.
I run into those who are comfortable in Zombieland who tell me my approach is too hard, too much work, too difficult. I find myself thinking “Sheeeesh! It doesn’t get any easier than WordPress!” Back in the day, site owners didn’t have one iota of the control they do with WordPress — how soon we forget…
What more can I do to make online business success easier? The fact is, I can’t make it easy — because it just isn’t easy.
In Zombieland one of the characters named Tallahassee, played by Woody Harrelsson, had a tag line he used when having to do the tough stuff — like kill zombies:
“Time to Nut Up or Shut Up!”
Want to succeed online? Yes, get a WordPress site for all the reasons I write about here. But don’t kid yourself into thinking that you won’t have to learn:
- How to properly use WordPress.
- How to navigate your theme’s dashboard and features.
- How to use the widgetized areas of your theme to ensure the best results and user friendly experience.
- How to properly create photos and graphics.
- How to find and choose the most appropriate photos for each post.
- How to best leverage the wealth of social media tools and networking sites.
- How to write interesting, useful and unique content.
Hey, I admit — there are days when sitting behind this screen I too feel like a zombie. I feel brain dead. I get it. It can be overwhelming, it can be frustrating and some days it seems impossible to deal with all that is going on.
But that my friends is what having a successful WordPress site is all about.
The good news is you don’t have to eat any brains to get there — just use the one you have.
