Recession Marketing: No Time to Be Pusillanimous!
We’re going through some tough times. Markets are crazy; government is out of control. While we all can agree to these facts, still and all it is no time to be pusillanimous:
pusillanimous \pyoo-suh-LAN-uh-muhs\, adjective:
Lacking in courage and resolution; contemptibly fearful; cowardly.
Why market in an economic downturn when supposedly no one is spending? Because marketing is all about encouraging folks to spend — you just have to be more consistent, on message and aggressive at times like these.
Now more than ever is the time for online businesses to pull themselves up by their boot straps and not fall into a pusillanimous train of through due to all the craziness around us. It’s easy to fall prey to all the bad news; I get that. But one thing I also get is that when the going gets tough; the tough get going!
Here are a few tasks you can do to make sure things continue to happen for your business when everyone else is sitting on their hands talking doom and gloom. No big-time cost involved — just your time:
Time is an equal opportunity employer. Each human being has exactly the same number of hours and minutes every day. Rich people can’t buy more hours. Scientists can’t invent new minutes. And you can’t save time to spend it on another day. Even so, time is amazingly fair and forgiving. No matter how much time you’ve wasted in the past, you still have an entire tomorrow.

- Take the extra time you may now have to review your Web site copy. Do you have the details site visitors need to see to determine you are the one they want to do business with? Write and add more niche focused articles and white papers to add value to your site, reflect your expertise and encourage inbound links. There is always something to update! If you have an eStore do you include as much detail as possible (put on your customer hat and think about what your customer would want to know before making a purchase) for every product. Do you have calls to action?
- Seek out discussion forums where you believe your target market may be discussing what is important to them. Pop in and answer questions and be of assistance — no hypey sales pitchy stuff — only offer valuable asked for input. Also check into forums about your favorite hobby and join in the conversation. Include a link to your business site in your signature file. Talk about fishing and soft sell your business. Read my article on discussion forum marketing.
- Slower times are a perfect time to review your Web site layout and design. When was the last time you updated your look? Is it contemporary or outdated? Is it time for a fresh look and approach? You can buy a new look and customize it yourself and at the same time revitalized your business. Use slower times to learn new Web design skills to learn how to code the basic changes for your site.
The above tasks are actually things that site owners should be thinking about and doing 24/7. Unfortunately, when the good times roll, folks get lazy and complacent and don’t cover all the bases they should.
The bottom line is that in today’s environment, only those businesses that are not pusillanimous will survive.

I think everyone here is getting plenty of exercise. Exercise at jumping to conclusions, leaping toward rumors and running from the imaginary. Can we just stick to the subject at hand.

Thanks for your commentary Smithsan! It appears we agree… Don’t be pusillanimous!
Unfortunately, the reality is that many have these perceptions. Therefore this post in fact addresses “the subject at hand.”
What prompted my post was the fact that I get calls daily from clients and potential customers alike asking what they can do in regard to their sites and online programs specifically using the “R” word.
The subject at hand is to keep on doing regardless of the rumors or conclusions some may be jumping too! That’s what will give you the edge!
