R.I.P. Meta Keyword Tag
Finally! Google has come out and stated what many of us have been saying for years — contrary to the ongoing myths “out there” perpetrated by uninformed site owners and consultants.
On Monday, the Google Blog in a post titled “Google does not use the keywords meta tag in web ranking” that also included the video below, states emphatically in regard to the Keyword Meta Tag:
Q: Does Google ever use the “keywords” meta tag in its web search ranking?
A: In a word, no.
This video is a must see for every meta keyword tag addict!
So now that we have this directly from the horses mouth, site owners need to get over the fallacy that by adding, changing or rearranging keywords in the Meta Keyword tag alone will make any difference in their rankings. It won’t! Finale. Done. Foe-ged-aboud-it!
Now this is only the Meta Keyword tag — and Google. You still need to be committed to creating quality unique and relevant Meta Title and Description tag contents for every single page on your site. Those tags are what search engines really pay attention to and use to correlate with the rest of the on page content.
But… things could change in the future. The only thing consistent about the online world is change, right? So use that Meta Keyword field to type in the top 3 keyword phrases for your post as a reminder and to help you focus and keep those prioritized as you write your content. This way if down the road the importance of this tag changes you’re covered!
Spend your time creating keyword rich, interesting and exclusive content that your caters to your target market’s questions, needs, desires, dilemmas, conundrums. Now that, my friends, is time well spent!
