Clunkers are Not Just Cars — They’re Web Sites Too!
Doing business online means you need to embrace the now and not be stuck on inefficient old technology and presentations. Imagine my frustration when working with current and new clients alike who do not want to embrace the now because their feet are stuck in the cement of the past?
They have clunker Web sites with bad paint jobs, rust around the edges, worn out text, features and functionality that are outdated or don’t work at all. Many not willing to invest even the cost of an oil change into their decrepit old sites. (But that doesn’t stop them from expecting great mileage!)
What prompted this rant was that last night I was searching around for this and that online. I was struck by quality and style of the of sites I was running into. Now, these were not techie sites, by the way. I was searching for jewelery supplies for my hobby business where I create custom suncatchers, jewelry and body amulets.
What surprised me was I was landing on one Web 2.0, clean and professional looking site after another! Brand new models abound! Clean, shiny, custom paint jobs, feature rich Web sites with all the bells and whistles seem to be the rule — not the exception. Now that’s what I’m talking about!
Then, when I did land on a clunker HTML DIY effort — it stuck out like a sore thumb. Emphasis on sore! I couldn’t hit the Back button fast enough!
There were several sites I ran into that had what I was looking for. But they were clunker sites, obviously home brewed and did not provide the confidence I needed to make a purchase with them. I mean, if they don’t understand that by looking like they “get” technology and the importance of providing a polished quality current presentation, am I supposed to then make the leap that they “get” online security, privacy, product quality, customer service? Don’t think so…
Finally business owners seem to be realizing that how they present their online business directly correlates with the perception of quality in regard to their business, products and services. You are your site; your site is your business. Clunker site; clunker business.
Would you hand out a ratty stained worn-out business card to a potential contact or customer and expect to impress? Would you pick up a client for a lunch meeting in a cash for clunker car and actually think that they will perceive your company as a successful business?
Why then would you expect that having a clunker Web site will produce a positive impression, any tangible results or opportunity?
So for those of you with cement on your shoes working on your old broken down clunker Web sites, break out that sledge hammer and set yourself free! Before your bottom line makes that choice for you!
At your service,
Judith
